We Never Walk Alone

At the age of 18, Doug Heir was a 6-foot-4-freshman football player in college. He was a black belt in karate. In the summer, he was a lifeguard at a neighborhood pool. One day he heard a boy cry out for help. The boy was drowning. Heir jumped from his lifeguard tower to save the drowning boy, but he struck his head, broke his neck, and was instantly paralyzed.

Did he give up? He very well could have, but his positive attitude and faith turned his entire life around. Following months of grueling rehabilitation, he began to lift weights and get stronger. Eventually, he learned how to shot put, throw the javelin and discus. He became so good at it, he entered the Olympic competition and earned the right to represent the U.S. at the last four Olympics. Doug Heir won three more gold medals at last year’s Paralympic Games in Atlanta.

He loves to go around and talk to school children, especially those who have serious obstacles to overcome. He said, “They need to hear from someone like me who also had serious problems. They need to hear that I overcame them and so can they.

The title of his upcoming book sums up his philosophy of life. The name? We Never Walk Alone.

Today I look at all my life’s challenges through the eyes of Spirit. I see that no matter what my life looks like, I can turn any situation around by changing my perspective. There is nothing that God and I can’t handle. And so it is.
