God’s Messengers
My son, Scott, and I had many unusual adventures when we lived in Hawaii. One such adventure occurred when we were living in a cave in the Hanakapiai Valley, on the island of Kauai. In order to get to the cave, we had to hike a two-mile trail. Part of this trail wound up a steep mountain. On one side of the trail was the mountain face itself, and on the other side was a sheer drop off into the sea.
One night, about four in the morning, we needed to hike out of the valley in order to get into town to go to the airport to pick up a friend. Outside, it was pitch black, for the moon had already set. Foolishly, we had not brought a flashlight. We felt we had hiked that trail so often that we knew every inch of it intimately. How wrong we were! Everything seemed totally different in the middle of the night. We began the hike with great confidence and enthusiasm, considering it a challenge. We soon lost our momentum, however, when we reached the summit of the trail. We came to a standstill and wondered if we should just grope our way along the mountain face until we got out. “God, what are we going to do?”
I asked. All at once, we heard a rustling sound in the dead leaves beneath our feet. Soon, there came another sound, and yet another. Suddenly, I realized the sound was produced by the hopping of toads and that they were following the trail and leading the way! After that, Scott and I walked wherever we heard a toad hop. God certainly sent the experts to be our guides.
When I don’t know where to turn or what step to take, I turn to You, God, and in sometimes strange or surprising ways You show me the way. When I am up against a sheer wall or facing a life-threatening crisis, I turn to You, God, and You show me the way.
