He Leadeth Me

Updated: Jan 31, 2023

Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

— I Samuel 15:22

The one seeking to demonstrate the power of spiritual realization in everyday affairs should believe in divine guidance.

He Leadeth Me

Sometimes life seems like a brown paper bag containing myriad exciting packages all invitingly wrapped. Not knowing what you’re going to get, you reach in and grab the most appealing one. But life does not have to be a chancy affair … if you stop for a moment and listen to the still small voice within.

I came home from the store one day and found a brochure in the mailbox from the local adult-education school, which was addressed, to “Resident.” I thumbed through it, hoping to find some music courses. Not one did I see. Before I consciously knew what was happening, I dialed the principal and complained, “Every adult school should offer music! There are lots of senior citizens who would love to take piano, or guitar, or recorder lessons. So I am volunteering my services free of charge. I’ve taught music for over 20 years!”

The principal, a Juilliard graduate, was delighted, and later, as I sat across the desk from him, he offered me a job with an excellent salary. Suddenly I said, “I was led to call you!”

He smiled and responded, “You talk like someone I used to know years ago.” “Who’s that?” I asked. He looked at me, took a deep breath, and said, “Ernest Holmes.”

I make up my mind this morning to follow my intuition and inner leadings without question.

I trust the Mind that knows all. I say with rejoicing,

“He leadeth me! … What e’er I do, where e’er I be, still ‘tis God’s hand that leadeth me.”
