The Cookie In The Oven

Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.

— Proverbs 27:1

Today is the day of complete salvation, not tomorrow or the day after, but NOW.

— The Science of Mind, page 503

The Cookie In The Oven

Remember the story of the new bride who was baking cookies for the first time? She was so enthralled with mixing batch after batch of culinary delights that she momentarily forgot what was in the oven. All at once, an odor assailed her nostrils which made her zoom to the oven and open the door. Alas! Too late! It was then she remembered what her mother had painstakingly taught her, “The cookie in the oven is the most important cookie!” Or ... live now!

How often when we are experiencing something warm and loving and beautiful, do we allow a worry about the future or a guilt feeling about the past to creep in and ruin the now? Now is the pearl of great price and unless we cherish it, it will vanish with the swiftness of a hummingbird in flight. Now is the only reality, so let us make it lovely.

And then, like the gypsy song says ...

Yesterday has disappeared, a smoke that left your flame.

Tomorrow:

What is tomorrow?

Tomorrow is only a name.

Only now, this moment lives, a lark that lifts its wings

Without a thought for yesterday, nor for tomorrow sings.

Na lay, na lay, na lay,

The sun lives only for today.

I love you! I’m glad you’re here! I love me, too! I give us all a big hug! I appreciate this moment and let all my good feelings permeate every cell! I feel happy to be alive. The cookie in my oven is the most delicious creation I have ever tasted. Thank You, God, for these nows!
